The Admin Tasks You Need to Do When Moving to Madrid

Moving to Madrid involves some bureaucracy. It's not as complicated as it seems, but it helps to know what to do and in what order. Here's the essential guide.

1. The NIE: Your Identity Number in Spain

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is essential for almost everything in Spain: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, working legally, or paying taxes.

How to apply:

Processing time: 1-4 weeks depending on the office. Book an appointment online in advance.

2. Empadronamiento: Official Census Registration

The padron municipal is the register of residents in each municipality. Registering in Madrid gives you access to public healthcare, social services and other benefits.

How to register:

3. Bank Account

You'll need a Spanish account to direct debit rent and utilities. With a passport and NIE you can open an account at any bank. Most recommended for foreigners: BBVA, Santander and Sabadell, which offer English-language service. Many expats also use Revolut or Wise as a complement.

4. Spanish Phone Number

Not mandatory but makes everything much easier. Spanish tariffs are competitive: for €15-25/month you get unlimited data and calls. Popular operators: Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and MVNOs like Digi or MásMóvil.

5. Health Card

Once registered on the census, you can request the individual health card (TSI) at your local health centre. With it you access Spanish public healthcare free of charge.
